Designer’s Own 400 sqm Lake-View Villa
A four-storey, 400 sqm lake-view villa designed as the designer’s own home, and a reflection on how an ideal large house meets real daily life. The project considers family structure, vertical circulation, storage, parent-child areas, and leisure scenes.

Design concept
The project does not treat villa scale as display. It translates a personal wish list into a livable system: a full wall of bookshelves, a vinyl corner, a lake-view tea room, a main suite, a parent-child bathroom, three terraces, and an efficient kitchen. The lived-in review brings the design back to long-term, high-frequency use.

Project Background
This four-storey lake-view villa in Shenzhen was designed as the designer’s own home. It carried many ideas of an ideal life: more space, complete family functions, and places for books, music, tea, terraces, and parent-child routines. After more than a year of living in it, the home also became a real review of what a large house truly needs.
Four-Storey Structure
The first floor includes a two-car garage, entrance, and elder suite. The second floor is the main living and dining area. The third floor contains the child’s room and a separate family room. The fourth floor is the main suite and activity room. Each floor has a bathroom, and three terraces of over 20 sqm support a fuller vertical living structure.
Public Areas
The entrance cabinet was made with leftover boards and cement blocks, and the artwork was also made by the designer. The living room includes a full wall of bookshelves and a vinyl corner, making reading, music, and family interaction the centre of daily life.
Kitchen System
The kitchen focuses on real daily efficiency: a double-door refrigerator, bar counter, built-in steam oven and oven, dishwasher, and direct drinking water system are all integrated. Upper cabinets are reduced, and most lower cabinets become drawers for easier access.
Main Suite and Bathroom
The main bedroom includes a vanity drawer cabinet and ambient lighting. The main bathroom uses a built-in bathtub and wall-mounted washer, combining comfort with practical everyday washing and storage routines.
Living Review
The lake-view tea room, terraces, and personal corners were all realized, but their actual frequency of use did not always match the initial imagination. The value of this case lies not only in completion, but also in helping clients judge which wishes deserve investment and which functions will truly enter long-term life.
